About Stephanie

Stephanie Heitkemper, PhD, LPC, RPT-S, FT 

 

Dr. Stephanie Heitkemper is a compassionate and dedicated Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and the proud owner of Resilient Minds Counseling, PLLC situated 15 miles north of downtown Denver, Colorado. Stephanie brings a wealth of qualifications and expertise to each session and consultation. Stephanie is a beacon of support for individuals and families navigating the complexities of grief and trauma.  

 

Credentials & Specializations:  

 

Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S): Dr. Stephanie is recognized by the Association for Play Therapy as holding expert knowledge in play therapy skills and theory. Dr. Stephanie utilizes play therapy to help children and families create meaning and understanding in their experience.  

 

EMDR Certified Therapist and EMDRIA Approved Consultant: Dr. Stephanie possesses advanced qualifications in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is evidence-based and globally recognized to support healing from trauma and emotional distress.  

 

Fellow in Thanatology (FT): Dr. Stephanie earned her Fellow in Thanatology from Association of Death Education and Counseling (ADEC).  Dr. Stephanie’s Fellow in Thanatology recognizes her commitment in the field of death, dying, and bereavement. 

 

Professional Contributions: 

 

Dr. Stephanie’s dedication extends beyond her practice. She is a co-author of resources designed to support children experiencing grief and trauma. As an engaging and energetic speaking, she shares her expertise on topics such as childhood bereavement, play therapy, trauma informed support and practices, and ways to educate and empower volunteers.  

 

Academic Journey: 

 

Dr. Stephanie earned her undergraduate studies in Psychology and Human Services at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Stephanie obtained her master’s degree in Marriage Family Therapy from Regis University in Denver, Colorado. Stephanie accomplished her PhD in Counseling and Psychological Studies from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  

 

Life Beyond Counseling: 

 

Dr. Stephanie’s journey has been shaped by a diverse and adventurous background. Growing up as third-culture kid, spending most of her childhood on the East Coast. This upbringing instilled a deep appreciation for diversity and life complexities. In her free time, she is an advocate for physical and mental well-being, enjoying early morning CrossFit sessions. When Dr. Stephanie is out of the office you can find her exploring Colorado with husband and Boxer, Frank or on an airplane off to the next adventure!
